Ⅰ. Background and Aims of the Research
o The need for analysis of greenhouse gas emission reduction potential and costs in the industrial sector
ㅇ The greenhouse gas emissions from the industrial sector account for approximately 36% of the total emissions in Korea.
- The major contributors are steel (16%), petrochemicals (11%), cement (6%), and refining and semiconductor manufacturing (3%).
ㅇ The carbon emission reduction target for the industrial sector by 2050 is set at over 80% compared to the emissions in 2018.

o Proposal for cost-effective strategies in the introduction of carbon neutrality technologies in the industrial sector
ㅇ Deriving insights into the impact and effects of technology adoption by estimating carbon neutrality technology costs in industries such as steel, petrochemicals, cement, and semiconductor
ㅇ Establishing a technology cost database to secure foundational data for diverse research endeavors

Ⅱ. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Related Policies in the Industrial Sector
1. Domestic and international greenhouse gas emissions status
o Korea is ranked eighth globally in terms of total greenhouse gas emissions.
ㅇ As of 2020, South Korea’s total greenhouse gas emissions were 546.8 CO2 eq, securing the eighth position globally. This places South Korea behind countries such as China (first, 10,081.3 CO2eq), the U.S. (second, 4,257.7 CO2eq), and Japan (fifth, 989.6 CO2eq).
- Korea reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 6.9% compared to 2019, leading to a decline in the global ranking to the eighth place.
ㅇ Korea’s per capita greenhouse gas emissions stand at 1
