Food Waste Recycling Issues and Policy Tasks : Focusing on the Issue of Food Waste Disposer
Ⅰ. Background and Aims of Research
ㅇ Korea’s food waste separation and recycling policy has been promptly introduced by the government. It is recognized as a world-leading policy thanks to the active participation of citizens.
ㅇ However, a recycling policy that considers the demand for recycled products and a separate collection policy that considers convenience for citizens is needed to ensure the continuing success of the policy.
ㅇ Since 2012, using a food waste disposer with a solid recovery device attached has been allowed to prevent impacts on sewage. However, there are concerns about its impact on sewage because illegal use such as removing the solid recovery device at home is widespread.
ㅇ It is necessary to review the direction of the food waste recycling policy in order to improve the effectiveness of separate disposal while achieving its purpose.
ㅇ In this study, we reviewed the issues in food waste recycling and using food waste disposers and suggested considerations and policy tasks regarding recycling to minimize impacts on sewage systems when using a food waste disposer.

Ⅱ. Issues in Food Waste Recycling
ㅇ The total amount of food waste has been increasing since 2013. However, it decreased in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19.
ㅇ The separate discharge rate and recycling rate increased to 98.7% and 95.7%, respectively, but decreased to 90.6% and 89%, respectively, in 2020.
ㅇ Food recycling mainly includes composting and animal feed. The anaerobic digestion method has recently increased to 14%.
