Korea is recognized as a successful case of implementing the separate food waste disposal scheme and recycling policy. That said, there has been a steady call for a policy/technical alternative to alleviate the inconvenience of sorting out waste and recyclables for disposal. Indeed, this issue has often been included in presidential campaign pledges. In 2012, the household use of a food waste disposer was allowed on a limited basis following the introduction of certification standards (i.e., solids content recovery of 80% or over or discharge of below 20%). The use of food waste disposers has been on the rise since then with cumulative sales volume reaching 180,000 units in 2020.

This research explored policy alternatives to reduce the inconvenience in complying with the separate food waste disposal scheme. Considerations for recycling food wastes, and potential impact on the public sewage system and response measures were also discussed.
