A Study on Strengthening and Promoting the National Carbon-Neutrality Strategy
Author: Lee, Sangyoup et al.
The discussions on carbon neutrality are shaping up both here in Korea and around the world. The 26th UN Climate Change Conference took place in November, 2021 and brought 197 countries to Glasgow, England. South Korea announced the 2050 Carbon Neutrality and the updated 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions in 2021. The Korean government is developing strategies for each sector to implement 2050 Carbon Neutrality Scenarios. Active discussions on the updated 2030 goal are ongoing throughout Korean society.
Now is the time to prepare an effective national strategy for accomplishing carbon neutrality. Particularly, the development and distribution of technology for successful energy transition are critical, and the solutions to minimize costs and social conflicts need to be wisely handled.
Korea Environment Institute carries out various research in regard to carbon neutrality, presents research results to the government, and makes efforts to encourage social engagement and debates. As part of these efforts, this research aims to contribute to invigorating the national carbon neutrality strategy. Among many different studies related to carbon neutrality, we expect that this research will specially provide policy implications and a foundation for in-depth research to achieve carbon neutrality in Korea.
