Setting the Direction for Climate, Atmosphere, and Energy Policy in line with the 2050 Low Emission Development Strategy - Focusing on the Power Sector

Author: Kim, Yong-Gun et. al.

Humanity has accomplished impressive economic development over the last two centuries through technological innovation and fossil fuels. However, the excess consumption of fossil fuels has caused the climate crisis, which we have to overcome by means of our new normal, Carbon Neutrality. Korea submitted the 2050 Long-term Low Carbon Emission Development Strategy under the national vision of Carbon Neutrality 2050 to UNFCCC and announced the 2050 Carbon Neutral Strategy, and the 2050 Carbon Neutral Scenarios. Furthermore, the Korean government announced the Updated 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions, which specifies that it plans to reduce carbon emissions by 40 percent of the level of 2018 by 2030, showing the nation’s firm commitment to greenhouse gas reduction. Achieving Net Zero by 2050 is an ambitious challenge. Hence, it is important to establish and implement effective and efficient policy based on quantitative research and analysis.

In this aspect, we conducted quantitative research on the impact that Carbon Neutral 2050 will have on the atmosphere and public health so we can present implications of policies on climate, atmosphere, and energy. Particularly, the impact of the power sector, which has a high estimated reduction potential, was thoroughly examined. Therefore, the results of this study will contribute to establishing and implementing governmental policy related to energy supply.
