The Korea Environment Institute (KEI) was invited to make a presentation at the seminar commemorating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Finland, hosted on September 21 in Seoul, Korea.

The seminar, titled “Collaboration & Innovation Towards Industrial Decarbonization,” focused on sharing the decarbonization policies of both countries to achieve their respective carbon neutrality goals, and introducing innovative technology and solutions from enterprises participating in an economic delegation from Finland. The event also aimed to explore more opportunities for fostering cooperation between the two countries.

During the seminar, Dr. Ji Hye Jo, Director of the Division for Resource Circulation at KEI, delivered a presentation titled “Accelerating a Circular Economy in South Korea: Current Status and Policy Directions.” Dr. Jo emphasized that the concept of a circular economy has emerged as an essential means of implementing carbon neutrality and a core element in developing industrial and trade policies. Therefore, enhancing resource circularity and the efficiency of use in product design and manufacturing will be a key determinant of global market competitiveness.

Dr. Jo explained that Korea has established a legal framework for implementing a circular economy and formulated national-level strategies to achieve carbon neutrality while developing industries that can serve as new growth engines. Dr. Jo introduced Korea’s strategies and plans for reaching carbon neutrality, with a particular focus on plastics and batteries, which can have a significant impact on circular economy implementation. Dr. Jo expressed hopes for enhanced cooperation between the two countries in various circular economy sectors, especially in establishing global standards for the circular economy, implementing a certification and tracking system for recycled materials, and developing methodologies for calculating carbon footprints. Dr. Jo also emphasized the need for structural reform and innovation across the society, as well as the cooperation, participation, and dedication of all its members, in order to facilitate the transition to a circular economy.
