The Korea Environment Institute (KEI) conducted a 10-day training program from July 4th to July 13th for 14 climate change officials from the Fijian government, including representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Infrastructure and Meteorological Services, Ministry of Fisheries and Forests, Ministry of Land and Transport, and Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways.

This training program was organized as part of an invitation-based initiative to support Fiji's low-carbon power generation strategy and climate resilience plan by sharing South Korea’s experiences and expertise in environmental policies and strategies for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Specific programs conducted during the training included expert lectures on South Korea’s carbon neutrality strategy and climate change policies, workshops for action plan development, sector-specific group activities, and field visits.

Additionally, through workshops with domestic experts, in-depth analyses were conducted on Fiji’s major issues and current status to support the formulation of action plans for carbon neutrality and climate change adaptation projects in various sectors such as energy, transportation, forestry, and agriculture.

This KEI-operated training program was aligned with the “Partnership for a Resilient Pacific with Freedom, Peace, and Prosperity,” adopted at the 2023 South Korea-Pacific Islands Summit, and focused on promoting climate resilience. It aimed to support Fijian officials in enhancing their policy capabilities in collaboration with South Korea and other Pacific Island countries.

KEI President Chang Hoon Lee expressed hope that this training would facilitate Fiji’s understanding of South Korea’s efforts and experiences in carbon neutrality and climate change response. He also emphasized continued support in developing the action plan further, fostering an enduring cooperative relationship between South Korea and Fiji.
