The Korea Environment Institute (KEI) co-organized the “Korea-Pacific Islands Cooperation Seminar” with the Korea Legislation Research Institute (KLRI) and Korea Maritime Institute (KMI). The seminar took place at the Korea Press Center on May 31 and was hosted by the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC). The purpose of the event was to discuss diverse channels for expanding networks and fostering cooperation between Korea and Pacific Islands, as well as ensuring the successful implementation of the Indo-Pacific Strategy. Areas of cooperation discussed at the event included climate change, oceans and fisheries, information and communication technology innovation, and culture.

Dr. Sungjin Kim, Head of the Global Cooperation Team at KEI, made a presentation in the first session, which mainly focused on cooperation for climate change adaptation and mitigation in Pacific Islands. Dr. Kim went into detail about the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) submitted by the Pacific Islands, highlighting the importance of establishing specific plans to aid them in their achievement. Dr. Kim specifically proposed the development of infrastructure for tackling climate change, including early warning systems and facilities for coastal protection, renewable energy solutions tailored to their demands, and capacity building through knowledge sharing programs.
