KEI, with Yonsei University, successfully hosted the International Workshop on Power Sector Modeling in Northeast Asia on December 20, 2022, in Seoul, Korea. The workshop invited global researchers from well-known academic and research institutions, particularly in Asia, to share the cutting-edge power sector modeling exercises and discuss the development of the power sector model specialized for Northeast Asia. Experts from various countries, including the U.S., China, and Japan, joined the hybrid workshop both online and offline, and shared the latest research results.

The workshop's main topics were “Power Sector Model Development and Findings,” “Analysis on Power Trade in NE Asia,” and “Research Collaboration.” Participants exchanged ideas and suggested directions for developing the appropriate power sector module.

Further, most participants emphasized the need for research collaboration and made a general agreement on further research collaboration, particularly in power sector modeling. It also reminded the importance of building the research capacity of young researchers, particularly in Asia.

Dr. Chen Huang, Dr. Shuichi Ashina, Dr. Jiang Kejun and other specialists agreed to the need for information sharing and confirmed their will to lead the effort to establish the Asia database. Dr. Yong-gun Kim, the director general of the climate and air quality research group of KEI, proposed face-to-face meetings or workshops for modeling exercises and received a lot of positive responses. Professor Tae Yong Jeong of Yonsei University specifically requested support for the young generation.

The workshop concluded with the promise of research collaboration and opportunities for next-generation researchers.
