KEI with Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ROK held Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change

joined the second director-general-level ASEAN-ROK Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change



□ The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ASEAN, a cooperation partner for Korea’s New Southern Policy that has forged a strategic partnership with Korea, held the 2nd director-general-level “ASEAN-ROK Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change” with the aim of strengthening cooperation and deepening solidarity on environmental issues and climate change. 

※ Agenda: (Environmental cooperation) △Air pollution, △ Forest cooperation, △ Marine environmental cooperation, △Green ODA (Response to climate change) △ Implementation of the Paris Agreement, △Korea-ASEAN Climate Change Cooperation Project

□  The two sides agreed on the need to expand related cooperation in the face of deepening environmental problems and climate crisis in Asia, and agreed to actively promote the ROK-ASEAN Project on Clean Air for Sustainable ASEAN (CASA), which is scheduled to be implemented through the Korea-ASEAN Cooperation Fund.

In addition, the two sides confirmed the need for cooperation to reduce methane, one of the greenhouse gases causing climate change, and ASEAN decided to positively review *Partnership for ASEAN-ROK Methane Action (PARMA)

* Partnership for ASEAN-ROK Methane Action (PARMA): Korea-ASEAN Cooperation Initiative aimed at strengthening ASEAN's methane reduction capabilities and laying the foundation for implementing related projects

ASEAN-ROK Dialogue

Lee Dong-gyu, Director of Climate, Environmental Science and Foreign Affairs, called for ASEAN's interest in the establishment and operation of ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Center for Carbon Neutrality and Green Transition* which the Korea Environment Institute (KEI) and the ASEAN Secretariat want to promote as Green ODA project.

□  ASEAN evaluated that Korea is contributing to strengthening ASEAN member countries' capacity to respond to environmental problems and climate change through Korea-ASEAN cooperation projects, and said it expects Korea's support to expand further.

Following the first dialogue in September last year, the second Korea-ASEAN environmental and climate change dialogue is evaluated to have solidified the foundation for expanding cooperation in the environmental and climate change sectors, one of the major areas of cooperation between Korea and ASEAN.
