"The Mid- to Long-term Direction for Environmental Policies to Move Ahead in the New Normal"
The Korea Environment Institute (KEI) held this year's 3rd KEI Environment Forum on November 3 at the Post Tower, Seoul.
The forum consisted of two sessions: the first session, titled “Realizing a Carbon Neutral Society”, was presided over by Dr. Yeora Chae, Director General of the Climate, Air Quality, and Safety Research Group at KEI; Dr. Ik Jae Kim, Director General of Water and Land Research Group at KEI, presided over the second session titled “Sustainable Integrated Management of Environmental Resources.”
Four presentations took place in each session. At the end of the session, a 40-minute panel discussion took place. The first presentation was made by Dr. Dongwon Shin, Director of the Division for Climate and Energy. The division is currently in charge of research on achieving carbon neutrality as well. Dr. Shin discussed the policy tasks for reaching net-zero emissions and the future direction for fulfilling those tasks.

The second presentation was made by Dr. Woo Hyun Chung, Director of the Division for Social Environment. Dr. Chung focused on the policy tasks for making the just green transition. Dr. Yangwon Suh, Director of the Division for Environmental Risk, made the third presentation on the future direction for risk management in the field of environmental health to respond to the climate crisis and deal with "emerging risks." The last presentation was made by Dr. Young Il Song, Chief Research Fellow at KEI who specializes in research on water quality management, environmental assessment, and climate change adaptation. Dr. Song discussed the mid- to long-term plans to tackle the climate crisis in the carbon neutral society and strategies for adaptation.
The second session began with the presentation by Dr. Ji Hye Jo, Director of the Division for Resource Circulation, on the topic of “Circular Economy for Sustainable Development.”

Following that, Dr. Chang Sug Park, Chief Research Fellow specializing in research on environmental planning and climate change, gave the presentation on the policy tasks to realize the carbon neutral society. Dr. Park is also serving as Head of the Research Group on Smart, Sustainable Cities.
Dr. Ho Jeong Kim, Senior Research Fellow of the Division for Integrated Water Management, discussed the policy tasks in the integrated water management sector and the key conditions for success. The last presentation was given by Dr. Kyoung Ho Kim, Director of the Division for Land Policy Assessment. He discussed the direction for improving the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) system in the new normal.

Eight people were invited as panelists: Professors Jeong In Kim and Tae Hoon Moon from Chung-Ang University, Chang Hee Park, Research Fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Research, Professor Dong Kun Lee from Seoul National University, Kwang Im Kim from the Korea Zero Waste Movement Network, Professor Jeongseok Choi from Joongbu University, Dr. Joo-Heon Lee from the Korea Water Resources Association, and Professor Sang-Don Lee from the Korean Society of Environmental Impact Assessment attended the event and shared valuable insights.
