2016 KEI-LASS-RAC-VASS-SEI Joint Capacity Building Seminar on
 SDGs Implementation in the Mekong Sub-Region:
Integrating Smart Agriculture Development and Promoting the Role of Women

Since 2012, Korea Environment Institute (KEI), Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), Lao Academy of Social Sciences (LASS), and Royal Academy of Cambodia (RAC) have organized annual capacity building seminars on the topics of sustainable development in the Mekong Region.
The seminar planned for 2016 in Vientiane, Lao DPR, is expected to intensify the discussion on SDGs implications in the Mekong region by deliberating on the integration of inclusive, environmentally friendly & smart agriculture in the rural areas of the Mekong. Furthermore, recognizing gender as a cross-cutting priority, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) will contribute to this joint effort by leading the discussion on ways to promote the importance of women’s role and participation in the agricultural sectorin achieving sustainable development. The seminar will serve as a platform to understand the gender dynamics in the Mekong region and contribute to the gender mainstreaming in Vietnam, Lao DPR and Cambodia.

Implementing the 2030 Agenda and SDGs in the Mekong: Where to Start (Chaired by Hoon Chang, KEI)
The adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the associate SDGs signalled the firm global intent to integrate environmental development with economic and social development cumulatively. With the year 2016 recognized as “the year of implementation,” several actors have already announced their efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda. Achieving environmentally sustainable, socially and economically inclusive development will require innovative action on all fronts. The keynote plenary session will aim to address on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs by focusing on the agricultural development and gender issues in the Sub-Mekong region.
