KEI Introduces our New President

The Korea Environment Institute is pleased to introduce our new President, Dr. Chang Hoon Lee, and Vice President, Dr. Jong Ho Kim. Dr. Chang Hoon Lee was appointed as the 13th President of KEI on January 28. The inauguration ceremony took place on February 7.

Dr. Chang Hoon Lee has been with the institute since 2003. He served as the Director of the Environmental Policy Group from 2014 to 2016, and as the Vice President from 2016 to 2017. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Seoul National University in Korea and Master’s and Doctor’s degree in Economics from Bremen University in Germany. Recently, he has participated in a great deal of research and activities involving how to achieve carbon neutrality in Korea. (click to view full article)

KEI News and Events


Following the inauguration of its new President Dr. Chang Hoon Lee, KEI underwent some organizational reform. The Center for Environmental Data Strategy which was part of the Department of Planning and Strategy, is now a separate entity. The Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change has become part of the Climate and Air Quality Research Group. The Division for Environmental Economy and the Division for Social Environment were integrated to the Division for Green Transition. Also, the Division for Environmental Risk has acquired a new name, the Division for Environmental Health. Please find the new organizational chart on our official Website at www.kei.re.kr/eng/.

KEI Seminars


■ KEI-British Embassy in Korea Joint International Seminar

On February 28, the Korea Environment Institute co-hosted an international seminar with the British Embassy in Korea, titled “Biodiversity and Economics: building a sustainable future for all.” The seminar focused on the current status of biodiversity policy in Korea and its future direction, the green new deal, ecosystem services, and more. Professor Partha Dasgupta from the University of Cambridge, also author of The Economics of Biodiversity, was invited to review his book and participate in discussions with Korea’s environmental specialists. Dr. Soo Jeong Myeong, Chief Research Fellow at KEI specializing in climate change adaptation and remote sensing application, also participated.

■ The Environmental Assessment Group held their monthly seminar on January 24. Dr. Tae Ho Park, Research Fellow in the Division for Resources & Energy Assessment, made a presentation on environmental noise and how to use spatial information.

 

■ KEI-KEEI Joint Symposium

The Korea Environment Institute and the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI) co-hosted a symposium on the scale of the cost of promoting carbon neutrality and how to deal with it. The symposium was held on February 24 and streamed live on YouTube. Dr. Yong Gun Kim, Chief Research Fellow at KEI made a presentation on environmental and economic ripple effects of carbon pricing. President Chang Hoon Lee gave opening remarks.

 

■ KEI co-hosted an online forum on January 12, titled "Participation of the Future Generation in Achieving Green Transition" with the Ecosociety. Topics of presentations included "Future Generation and Human Rights: Focusing on climate campaigns among teenagers" and "Analysis of the Participation of Future Generation in International Environmental Agreements and their Implications."

■ The Groundwater Research Group in KEI held an expert seminar with Professor Seongwook Jin on the role of groundwater in Antarctic lake systems on February 17. Professor Jin teaches Earth and Environmental Sciences at Jeonbuk National University. His main research areas include hydrogeology and groundwater purification.

■ The Division for Social Environment organized a forum on January 25, with the topic of "Just Transition Incorporating Labor." The seminar was co-hosted with the Ecosociety, an academic society dedicated to research on interaction between the natural environment and the human society. Presentations on discourse analysis of just transition in Korea and international cases of just transition and their implications were given. Dr. Woo Hyun Chung, Director General of the Sustainability Strategy Research Group participated in the discussion.
