KEI Seminars


In November, KEI had many opportunities to share knowledge and experience in various seminars.

■ The Sustainability Strategy Research Group held a seminar titled "Post-growth and Circular Economy for Green Transition" on November 11. The event was co-organized by KEI and the Korean Association for Environmental Sociology. Two presentations took place at the event: "The meaning and issues of Post-growth for Green Transition" by Hyun Woo Kim from the Energy and Climate Policy Institute and "Plastics and Post-growth in the Anthropocene" by Professor Kihoon Kim from Pohang University of Science and Technology.

 

■ KEI and the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) co-organized the special session of the 2nd Korea City Forum titled "Resilience and Carbon-neutral Cities." The event took place  at the Dragon City Hotel, Seoul, on November 25. Dr. Changsug Park gave a presentation on the policy tasks for realizing carbon-neutral cities. Jong Soon Park, Director General of the Research Center for Green Infrastructure at KRIHS, discussed the policy direction for achieving carbon neutrality from the perspective of urban planning. Seung Hyun Jeong, Head of the Smart City Cluster at the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology gave a presentation on how to retain resilience in declining cities.

 

■ KEI held a seminar titled "South Korea Moving toward Net-zero by 2050." Dr. Yeora Chae, Director General of Climate, Air Quality, and Safety Research Group presided over the event. Dr. Chang Hoon Lee, Chief Research Fellow of the Division for Climate and Energy, the department which is now in charge of carbon neutrality-related research as well, gave a presentation on the path to achieve carbon neutrality and the future direction.

 

■ The Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change (KACCC) designed a TV program in collaboration with EBS, South Korean educational public broadcaster, titled "Veggieearth." The program aims to introduce climate change mitigation and adaptation activities in relation to food culture, including eco-friendly vegetarian recipes. The first episode "Protect My Muscles!" was broadcast on November 18 on EBS 1TV and introduced high-protein vegetarian dishes.  

■ The Sustainability Strategy Research Group held a seminar on November 30 on how to promote national sustainable development in the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Tae Hoon Moon from Chung-Ang University was invited to provide insights into sustainable development in association with post-growth and the implications of the discussion on development of dynamic balance.

■ The Division for Social Environment organized a seminar on "cultural services review." Two lecturers were invited: Professor Yong Hoon Son from Seoul National University Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Ko Un Kim, Researcher at Seoul National University Asia Center. Professor Son discussed the research trend in cultural ecosystem services and Dr. Kim introduced cases of qualitative research on cultural services.
