Ⅰ. Research Background and Purpose
1. Research background and need
o Conservation value and development pressure in the Han River estuary area
ㅇThe Han River estuary area is a natural estuary wherein nature, ecology, history, and culture have been well preserved due to the lack of human activities for the past 67 years, since the ceasefire. It has been assessed as a place with significant natural conservation value.
ㅇHowever, along with South Korea’s economic development, the central government, local government, and companies seeking alternative development sites near Seoul have established their own development plans for the Han River estuary and are promoting development without joint consultation. Accordingly, threats to the natural ecosystem are expected to increase due to human activities.

oEmerging need for a place of sharing for raising the awareness of the Han River estuary area
ㅇThere is a need to raise awareness to prevent reckless development and investments and reduce the threat to natural ecosystems.
ㅇThere is a need to prepare a sustainable development strategy based on mid- to long-term plans such as inter-Korean joint use and regional development.
ㅇThere is a need to develop a solution to the issue of the Han River estuary whereby all stakeholders participate by promoting the unique ecological environment and historical and cultural values of the Han River estuary, while sharing information on development projects that are being promoted by the state, local government, and companies.
