Evaluation of resource circulation performance and waste treatment system suitability for sustainable waste management
Ⅰ. Introduction
o Research Background and Objective
ㅇ The amount of waste generated in Korea has been consistently increasing. As of 2017, the total amount of waste generated was 43,000 tons/day, and the amount of municipal waste per capita increased 0.06 kg to 1.01 kg from 0.95kg in 2012.
ㅇ Domestic waste generation is expected to increase from 430,000 tons/day in 2017 to 489,000 tons/day in 2027, however, there lacks the plan to handle the surplus waste properly.
ㅇ This study develops a method for evaluating the performance of resource circulation in South Korea and the suitability of treatment infrastructure in response to domestic and global issues related to waste, such as illegal dumping, neglected waste, and illegal exports of waste.
ㅇ This study proposes sustainable waste management strategies and ways to improve the legal and institutional basis for waste treatment.

o Research Scope and Content
ㅇ Policies related to waste generation and illegal waste are analyzed and a GIS-based approach for evaluating national resource circulation is developed to derive implications and prepare a proposal for improving the legal and institutional basis for waste management.
- Analyzes current policies related to waste generation and illegal waste and review of adequate waste treatment methods
- Analyzes domestic and overseas evaluations of the sustainability of waste treatment systems
- Analyzes basic data on domestic waste generation and waste treatment facilities, etc. for the evaluation of the suitability of waste treatment system
