Building climate
resilience through ecosystem-based adaptation in Rakhine State and Irrawaddy
River Delta, Myanmar

The project will be designed to increase resilience of
vulnerable communities in Rakhine State and the Irrawaddy Delta through the application
of large-scale EbA intervene and/or combining ecosystem-based adaptation
interventions with hard infrastructure. Using an ecosystem approach will allow
the local people to use the delta without compromising the integrity of the
systems future or overexploiting their natural resources. These interventions
will be underpinned by strengthening the institutional policy framework on
adaptation as well as capacity building in regional institutions.
The project will focus on most densely populated and
vulnerable coastal areas around the Irrawaddy
Delta as well as the bordering Rakhine State. During the
project design phase approx. 4 project sites will be identified through a participatory
approach involving intensive stakeholder consultations.
Worldwide successful examples show the importance of good
knowledge of the basic physical and
ecological processes, early involvement of local
stakeholders leading to a participatory planning process and an integrated and
sustainable approach to manage and develop the delta to cope with the new economic
situation in Myanmar.
By prioritizing large numbers of vulnerable people, and
using ecosystems based adaptation solutions as the means to reduce
vulnerability to climate change impacts, the project aims to significantly increased
adaptive capacity and reduce exposure to climate risks for Myanmar’s coastal
population. The potential EbA interventions
may include reforestation and/or conservation of mangroves, wetland restoration
and the introduction of sustainable practices for agriculture (including
fisheries and aquaculture)
