The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is currently preparing a special report on climate change and cities, the only special report in this Seventh Assessment Cycle (AR7). The IPCC held a scoping meeting for the Special Report on Climate Change and Cities from April 16 to 19, 2024 in Riga, Latvia. Over 140 experts from 65 countries convened at the meeting to draft the outline for the IPCC’s next Special Report.

Dr. Je-Woo Hong, a Research Fellow at the Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change (KACCC) within the Korea Environment Institute (KEI), attended the meeting as a representative of the Republic of Korea.

Dr. Hong provided insights on the importance of urban observation and modeling tools for monitoring and evaluating climate actions and unaccounted sources. He also shared experiences of KEI KACCC in implementing adaptation plans and various risk management tools and policies.

The outline of the special report, which is the outcome of this scoping meeting, is scheduled to be approved at the IPCC Plenary Session to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria in late July.
